Lady Anchors Stumble but Beat Pope John 3-1

The St. Clement Lady Anchors traveled to Lowell last week to face the Lowell Catholic Crusaders. After taking a 2-0 lead, they lost three consecutive games for their second devastating loss of the year. Junior captains Allison Caloggero (Medford) and Judy D’Haiti (Cambridge) each had eight assists. On the net, junior captain Kristina Ofoedu (Somerville) led the team with eleven kills, while sophomore Kayla Morello (Medford) was close behind with nine.

After the crushing loss, the Lady Anchors bounced back to beat league rival Pope John 3-1 in a battle for second place in the Catholic Central League (CCL) Small. Sophomore Megan Berg (Medford) tallied eighteen crucial service points. Ofeodu smacked twelve kills and D’Haiti helped the team out with eight assists. In the back row, junior Camilla Souza (Everett) had some key digs, giving the Lady Anchors a cushion. The victory boosts the Lady Anchors to an 8-2 overall record. The team is only two games away from clenching a spot in the State Tournament for the first time in over eleven years. The Lady Anchors will host the Cathedral Panthers on Friday, October 7 at 4:45pm in the Anchordome.

St Clement Anchormen Stun League Rival Matignon 28-26

The St. Clement Anchormen stunned league rival Matignon in a thrilling come from behind victory last Friday night. With 1:19 left in the game, Ricky Brathwaite (Chelsea) forced a fumble that popped into the open arms of Luke Hartnett (#75, Medford), who chugged his way into the end zone to givehis team the win. The victory, which makes the Anchormen 4-0, was bittersweet for Hartnett, who played for the Matignon Warriors in 2009.

Junior Oyaronbi (Chelsea) led the scoring for the Anchormen in the first half with a 33-yard reception from Jamey Thompson (Somerville) and an 85-yard kick return. At the half, the Anchormen were down by five due to the passing by Matignon QB John Flaherty (Somerville) and costly penalties.

Both teams were unable to score in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter St. Clement pulled ahead 21-18 with a 6-yard run from Matt Pereira (Somerville). The Warriors answered quickly with a 23-yard pass from Flaherty to Ron Slager (Cambridge) to push the Warriors ahead 26-21 after a successful two-point conversion.

With the win almost certain for the Warriors, Luke Hartnett stunned his former team mates with a thrilling 17-yard fumble return, sealing the victory for the Anchormen.

The St. Clement Anchormen take on the Lowell Catholic Crusaders under the lights Friday, October 7 at 7:00pm at Dilboy Field.
