Volleyball Team Earns Back to Back Wins

Despite playing really hard this season, the Mustang volleyball team hasn’t met with many victories- yet. The team is on the up swing, however, as the Lady Mustangs have “really come out swinging” and have taken two games in a row from their opponents, according to Head Coach Alice Beth FitzPatrick.

On Tuesday, Medford faced league rival Malden. Both teams went into the match with a 0-3 record in the league. The Mustangs came out ready to play tough and took the match in 3 sets. Senior setter and captain Christine Feeley paired up with junior setter Kayla Greeley to set up senior middle hitter Michelle Nguyen and senior outside hitter and captain Rachel Keen. Both Nguyen and Keen each had six kills during the 3-0 victory. The Mustangs were also helped to their 25-18, 25-12 and 25-23 wins by good passing from junior libero Katie Napier and strong serving performances by senior Daniella Lindemeyer, who had 12 service points. Junior Alison Ross closed out the match by serving the winning point.

On Wednesday, Medford faced Matignon for the second time this season. This time, in their home gym, the Mustangs were ready to play hard and battled their way to a 3-2 win. After a very close loss in the first set 25-23, the Mustangs came back to take the second set 25-18 with strong play at the net by senior middles Kelly Hayes and Nguyen. The third set was taken by Matignon again 25-23 but the Mustangs did not give up.

“Fueled by the energy and encouragement of our fans and with a willingness to succeed, the Mustangs came out strong again in the fourth set, winning 25-16,” said Coach FitzPatrick.

Senior Rachel Keen led the way with 11 service points and a kill during this set. With the momentum from the fourth set, the Mustangs continued to run with the match and took the last set 15-11.

The Mustangs are currently 3-7 on the season and 1-3 in the Greater Boston League. The team hopes to take the momentum from these last two matches into the second half of the season and come out with a winning record. Their next match is away against Arlington High on Friday, Oct. 7 followed by a home match on Wednesday, October 12 against league rival Somerville.
