On Saturday, October 29 the St. Clement Anchormen picked up their fifth win of the season in dramatic fashion against the Mustangs of Marian (Framingham) during a frigid, rainy game at Dilboy Stadium. Scoring was few and far between for both teams as the weather contributed to offensive struggles.
In the first quarter things got off to a bad start for the Anchormen as starting running back Alberto Lopez (Chelsea) went down with an injury, leaving the Anchormen short-handed on both sides of the ball.
“Our back-ups really stepped up today after what could have been a disaster for us,” said head coach Colin Walsh.
In the second quarter the Anchormen struck first as junior QBÂ Jamie Thompson (Somerville) threw a 20-yard pass to sophomore Junior Oyaronbi (Revere), who just barely kept his feet in bounds for the dramatic TD reception. Andrew Carvahlo (Somerville) added the kick and St. Clement was up 7-0. On the very next play Marian returned the kick down to the Anchormen 11-yard line. On third down running back Joseph Gabarino ran in the Mustangs’ only score of the day. Senior Trevor Rabidou added the conversion rush and the Mustangs had taken over 8-7 going into half time.
In the second half St. Clement had plenty of scoring chances, but two fumbles deep in Marian territory and a TD rush called back for an offside call kept the game close. In the fourth St. Clement stayed with the ground game and senior Matthew Pereira (Somerville) was a force picking up 103 yards on twenty-six carries on the day. With the game on the line St. Clement sophomore fullback Deron “Suga†Hines (Chelsea) picked the perfect moment to shine. On a second and long he rambled thirty-seven yards on a sweep to get down to the Marian 11-yard line. On the very next play he rumbled for the go-ahead score. Carvahlo added the kick and the Anchormen were up 14-8. The defense held off a hard-charging Mustang offense to secure the victory for the Anchormen.
On defense senior Kevin Pierre (Malden) kept the Mustang pass game in check as he recorded seven tackles, three for a loss, a sack, and four QB knockdowns to set the tone for the rest of the team. Jamie Thompson was also a stand out, recording five pass defenses and the game-securing interception to lead the way for the Anchormen.
