Both the Mustang boys and girls soccer teams blanked their opponents in round one of the state tournament to advance to the quarter finals.
On Saturday the girls soundly defeated East Boston 5-0. Alessia LaRocca led her team with three goals while Kly Goncalves and Katherine Timmins each scored a goal. Jackie Pellechia and Sam Lopilato each played one half in goal and shared the shutout, according to Head Coach Rachel Perry.
The Lady Mustangs, 13-4-1, are seeded eleventh out of nineteen teams in North Division 1. They advance to the quarterfinal round of the state tournament on Wednesday, November 9. The Mustangs will host North Andover (#14, 9-4-4) at 4:00PM on the field behind Medford High School.
The boys team defeated Chelmsford 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The first and only goal of the game was scored by Jean Joseph at the end of the first half. Both teams offered up strong defense and while Chelmsford had ample opportunity to score, the Mustangs held off the Lions’ offense every time.
The boys also advance to the quarterfinal round of the state tournament on Wednesday, November 9. They will head to Lincoln-Sudbury (#2, 14-0-2) for a 2:00PM game. The boys, 11-4-1, are the tenth seed out of twenty-two teams in North Division 1.
Cambridge (#18, 9-6-3) was the only other girls soccer team in the GBL to qualify for states and they were knocked out in the first round by Chelmsford. Somerville (#5, 12-2-4) and Cambridge (#17, 9-6-2) also qualified for the boys. Cambridge was defeated in the first round by Billerica while Somerville hosts Brookline (#12, 10-4-4) on Monday for its first state game.
