Daniel J. Horgan, 85
|Atty. Daniel J. Horgan, Jr., age 85, of Lynn, died on Monday after a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Jacqueline T. (O’Neil) Horgan for 46 years, until her death in 2000. A lifelong resident of Lynn, he was the son of the late Ellen T. (Hannon) Horgan and Daniel J. Horgan, Sr. Atty. Horgan was a graduate of St. Mary’s Boys High School, class of 1944. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed on the islands of Saipan and Iwo Jima in the Pacific. He graduated from Boston College in 1951, and received his Law Degree from Boston College in 1955. He also served as a Lynn police officer while attending college and law school.
Atty. Horgan was a prominent trial lawyer in Lynn and had been the former attorney for the Lynn School Committee. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Valladolid Council #70, Lynn, and was also a member of the Brickyard Neighborhood Council, the Lynn Board of Appeals and the Pine Grove Cemetery Commission.
In 1974, with the purchase of the South Boston Tribune, he began his career as a newspaper publisher. In addition to the Tribune, he owned four weekly newspapers, as well as two daily newspapers, The Malden Evening News and The Medford Daily Mercury.
He is survived by 6 children; Ann Marie Bayer of Hingham, Maureen Horgan of Marblehead, Eileen Chiavaroli and her husband James of Norwell, Daniel J. Horgan III of Mobile, AL, James Horgan and his wife Kathryn of Milton, and Patrick Horgan of South Boston; 4 grandchildren; Caitlin and Melissa Bayer, John Chiavaroli, and Caroline Horgan; his sister; Mary “Rita” Gutschke and her husband Robert of New Jersey; his sister-in-law; Lenore Porter of Marblehead; his brother-in-law; James O’Neil and his wife Catherine of Lynn, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John, Frederick and James Horgan.
His funeral will be held on Friday at 9AM from the SOLIMINE, LANDERGAN AND RICHARDSON Funeral Home, 67 Ocean St. (Rt 1A) Lynn, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Lynn at 10AM. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Thursday from 4-8PM.
