A Reading man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a van in Medford and causing a crash on Route 93 North after entering the highway in the wrong direction.
According to State Police, Richard S. Saunders, 48, was arrested in Dorchester after fleeing the scene of a four-car crash he allegedly caused by going southbound on Route 93 North. Saunders abandoned the van in the Adams Street area of Dorchester and was eventually found hiding under another vehicle in an attempt to evade police.
Police say Saunders stole a van from Grava Chrysler in Medford on Monday afternoon. No injuries were immediately reported as a result of the crash. Saunders was being treated for minor injuries at Boston Medical Center.
Police are still looking for a woman they believe was in the car with Saunders. In addition, Reading Police have a warrant out for Saunders’ arrest for similar wrong-way driving offenses.
According to televised reports, police believed Saunders to be under the influence of drugs.
