MHS Pool One Step Closer to Re-Opening
|The MHS pool in its former glory. The pool is closed and is currently empty, awaiting money for repairs.
The Medford High School pool, closed for several years, is one step closer to re-opening.
On Monday night the Medford School Committee approved a $2.5 million bond to cover repair costs.
According to Mayor Michael McGlynn, a 2007 report outlined all of the needed repairs, including work improving its structural integrity and replacement of the large windows above the pool that let in light but let out heat.
Swim coaches Mary Judge and Mary Hoarty and many of the swim team members came straight from a meet against Cambridge to Monday’s School Committee meeting. No one spoke as it was clear the School Committee supported the pool project, with several members speaking in favor of repairing the pool.
The next step in the process is the Medford City Council. On Wednesday the Council will meet in a Committee of the Whole to discuss the pool, a proposed parking garage on Governors Avenue, and a plan for parking enforcement and management. The Council will meet with school and city officials to discuss the details of the pool plan. The meeting is taking place in Room 207 at Medford City Hall and is open to the public.
Mayor McGlynn said he hoped the $2.5 million bond proposal to repair the pool will be before the Council for approval at its meeting on Tuesday, January 31.
