The young Saint Clement Lady Anchors continued their winning streak by grabbing wins against Mount Saint Joseph Academy and Trinity Catholic, improving their overall record to 6-8. On Tuesday, January 24 St. Clement led Mount Saint Joseph 21 to 13 at the half. While St. Joe’s continued to cut the lead, St. Clement was able to hold on to win 40-38. Stepping up for the Lady Anchors was Elva Martinez (Somerville), with her first double-double of the year, scoring ten points and grabbing fifteen rebounds. Jessica Popken (Medford, pictured) continued her offensive leadership with eleven points, while Allison Caloggero (Medford) and Katie Monestime (Somerville) led the defensive end with six steals each.
On Friday, St. Clement traveled to Newton to face Trinity Catholic. Eighth grader Katie Monestime (Somerville) was huge for the St. Clement Lady Anchors, scoring twenty-three points with six rebounds and six assists. Diana Tran (Somerville) was stellar from long range, scoring a career-high thirteen points. Sidney Cezil (Everett) racked up double digits, scoring twelve points. Elva Martinez (Somerville) continued her domination of the boards, grabbing thirteen rebounds. The Lady Anchors played one of their best games of the year, winning 66-28.
This week the Lady Anchors prepare for Maimonides and the Pope John Tigers of Everett on Friday.
Boys Basketball
The St. Clement Anchormen battled to return to the state tournament by beating Trinity Catholic 62-39, improving their overall record to 6-7. Kevin Foley (Medford) continued his impressive season with nineteen points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Jesus Gambaro (Charlestown) supported the effort with eighteen points and eight rebounds. The Anchormen will face Sutton High and Catholic Central League rival Pope John this week.
