Mustangs Advance in State Tourney
|The boys varsity basketball team narrowly edged Peabody, 49-48, in the preliminary round of the state tournament on Monday night in Medford. The game was a real nail-biter, with the Mustangs pulling off the win at the last second. Medford, now 11-10, seeded 16th out of twenty teams in North Division 1, will now face top seed Central Catholic, 20-1, at Central Catholic on Thursday, March 1 at 7PM.
Head Coach Anthony Faradie, who played college ball against Peabody head coach Thad Broughton, praised Broughton for getting his team to the tournament. According to Coach Faradie the Mustangs’ win is the first tournament win for Medford since 1999.
The girls varsity basketball team will open up their state tournament run on the road at Woburn on Thursday at 7PM. The Lady Mustangs, 12-8, are seeded 11th out of fifteen teams. Woburn, 16-4, is seeded 6th. The winner will play either Masconomet (#3, 17-3) or Somerville (#14, 10-10).
The Mustangs held onto their one point lead in the last second of the game.
It was standing room only in the Medford High gym Monday night. A large and loud home crowd cheered the Mustangs onto victory.
