Local Catholic Schools Hang Tough in State Tourney

The Medford High School Mustangs might be out of contention, but several Medford athletes are still competing in the state tournament for Arlington Catholic and Malden Catholic.
The Lady Cougar basketball team, after winning a state championship for the first time in school history last season, finds itself in the final game against Reading after a 57-34 win over Wilmington on Wednesday. The team, 19-3 heading into the tournament, will play an undefeated 20-0 Reading team on Saturday, March 10 at the Tsongas Arena.
The AC boys basketball team, 14-6, seeded fifth out of thirteen teams, made it into the semi-finals before losing to number eight seed Saugus on Thursday. The Cougars previously posted wins against Newburyport and Minuteman.
The AC Lady Cougar hockey team, 16-3-1, seeded fourth out of twenty-seven teams, will play in the Division 1 semi-finals against Braintree (#9, 13-5-2). The game is taking place on March 10 at the Stoneham Arena.
The Malden Catholic hockey team is the reigning Super Eight champ after compiling an impressive 21-2-2 record last season. MC, 15-1-4 this season heading into the tournament, is the top seed. MC has so far defeated St. John’s of Shrewsbury and BC High. The Lancers play Hingham, 16-4-2, the only public school in the Super Eight, on Sunday, March 11 at 2:15PM at Merrimack College.
