Medford High junior Allyson Mollung, a varsity golf team member, has been selected by the PGA of America to attend the Ryder Cup Junior Academy in Port Lucie, Florida this summer for an all-expenses-paid week of training.

Mollung entered the contest in January 2012. She was required to submit an essay to explain why she should be chosen to attend. After careful consideration of all applications, Mollung was selected by the New England PGA Section as the winning candidate and later approved by PGA National.

“Allyson has been a pleasure to coach for the past three years and as a senior next year I am expecting a great season from her. I depend a great deal on Allyson, who sets a great example for the younger members of the team. She will be hard to replace when she graduates,” said MHS Golf Coach Ray Dyer. “She is a hard working and dedicated student athlete. Hopefully she will continue her golf career in college where opportunities for female golfers are expanding.”

The Ryder Cup Junior Academy is a seven-day program conducted at the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance in Port St. Lucie, Fla. with an emphasis on shot making, scoring, swing mechanics, competitive course management, technology, equipment, fitness and physical assessments. A good deal of the program is based on the Ryder Cup and learning from its rich history.

The PGA of America created the Ryder Cup Junior Academy in response to recommendations from past United States Ryder Cup Team Captains. This initiative is designed to expand the outreach of the Ryder Cup and provide a select group of aspiring young players, who otherwise couldn’t afford it, the opportunity to attend an elite player development academy. The Academy is a unique, once-in-a lifetime experience.
