Baseball Team Earns 1st Win of Season
|The boys varsity baseball team earned their first win of the season at their home opener on Tuesday.
The young Mustang team, composed mostly of sophomores and juniors, defeated Matignon 3-2. Sophomore Ryan Colbert pitched 6 and 2/3 innings, striking out four with no walks. Junior John Lavoie got the save on the mound, striking out a Matignon batter with the bases loaded to end the game.
Lavoie was 2-3 with a run scored. Junior Jake Porrazzo was 1-3 with the game-winning RBI in the fifth inning. Sophomore Tyler McLean was 1-3 with a run scored while sophomore Daveid Center had an RBI and a run scored, according to Assistant Coach Ryan Kozul.
Head Coach Mike Nestor said the season is being played in honor of the late secretary to Athletic Director Bob Maloney, Noreen O’Connor.
“This season is being played in honor of Noreen O’Connor for her loving support for the athletes of MHS. Noreen was especially supportive of me in my first year as head coach. I’ve known Noreen for thirteen years of coaching and she was a huge supporter for MHS baseball. Medford High may never again have a secretary of Athletics that cared about every single kid no matter what background,” said Coach Nestor.
Sophomore Ryan Colbert’s first varsity start was also his first varsity win on the mound.
Junior John Lavoie was key both offensively and defensively for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs have a young team this season with only two seniors.
The Mustangs played Matignon on Wednesday in honor of Medford resident John Granara, a Matignon graduate who also supports the Medford baseball team. Granara is pictured with Mayor Michael McGlynn at the game.
