Crew Team Kicks Off Season
|The Medford High School crew team kicked off its season over April vacation with two races on Lake Quinsigamond in Central Massachusetts.
The Mustang rowers competed on a 1,500 meter course, according to Julia Hendrix of Friends of Medford Rowing. The races were a chance for Medford to practice its new boat lineups, introduce its new rowers to a race course, and to compete in doubles before heading into the competition season.
On April 19 the Mustangs competed against Duxbury Bay Maritime School, Malden High School, Worcester Public Rowing, Bay View Academy (Rhode Island) and Shrewsbury High School. On April 21 Medford competed in a dual race against Worcester High School and both teams got together for a cookout afterwards, according to Hendrix.
This season, under the direction of new head coach Edward McCormick, the team will field boats of eight and four rowers in both mens’ and womens’ varsity and novice divisions. For the first time the Mustangs will also enter sculling events (two person boats).
“This year the MHS crew team has started rowing out of the Medford side of the Mystic and we’re really excited about our season and our new head coach, Edward McCormick. He and Coach Nick Wright have introduced sculling (two person boats) for the first time in the program and are finding lots of rowing opportunities for our team,” said Hendrix.
Medford will compete on Saturday, April 28 in the Greater Boston League Championships. Races will be held on the Malden River beginning at 1:00PM.
