Hearing April 8th to Determine Fate of Historic Home

244 Main Street MedfordA public hearing is scheduled prior to the demolition of a historic Medford home, according to a notice from the Medford Historical Commission.

On Monday, April 8 the Historical Commission will consider a request to demolish the house at 244 Main Street. The Commission considers the home a “significant building” and is holding the hearing to determine if the demolition of the house…would be detrimental to the historical, cultural, or architectural heritage or resources of the City of Medford,” says the notice.

According to Historical Commission member Ryan Hayward, the home was built in the 1860’s and is one of the earliest buildings in Medford still remaining from the first wave of development around the renowned Royall House, which was built in the 1700’s.

Hayward said a developer plans to tear down the house and replace it with a building that would have at least eight apartments.

According to the city’s real estate database, the home, currently a two-family, is valued at $489,800. It has been owned by a Weston man since 1986.

The public hearing is taking place at 7:00PM in Room 201 at Medford City Hall.
