Markey, Gomez Win Party Senate Nominations

Ed MarkeyDemocratic Congressman Edward Markey and Republican Gabriel Gomez are the winners of Tuesday’s special state primary for US Senate.

Markey defeated fellow Democratic Congressman Stephen Lynch while Gomez, a former Navy Seal, was the winner of a three-way Republican race with former Plymouth Country District Attorney Michael Sullivan and State Representative Dan Winslow.

On Tuesday night, with three quarters of results posted, Boston.com had Markey with around 57% of the vote state-wide while Gomez received 51%.

Gabriel GomezIn Medford, Markey won 66% of the vote while Lynch earned 34%, according to preliminary numbers released by the City Clerk. Markey earned 4,786 Medford votes while Lynch received 2,458 votes.

Far more Democratic ballots than Republican ballots were cast in Medford on Tuesday. Gomez, the top GOP candidate, earned 544 Medford votes compared to Sullivan’s 474 and Winslow’s 114.

Just over twenty-three percent of registered voters in Medford participated in the special primary.

Markey thanked his supporters in a tweet on Tuesday night.

“Thanks to our volunteers & supporters across MA for your hard work this campaign. We wouldn’t have made it so far without you,” said the tweet.

Markey also released a statement praising Lynch for running a “hard-fought” campaign.

“Steve ran a tough, energetic campaign that gave voice to the concerns of working people across Massachusetts, and his entire team deserves a great deal of credit. I look forward working with him as we continue to build a stronger, fairer, and more secure Massachusetts,” said the statement.

Markey and Gomez will compete in a special election on June 25 to fill former Senator John Kerry’s seat.
