The Medford High School girls varsity lacrosse team defeated Waltham for the first time since Coach Matt Galusi has led the team.
The Lady Mustangs earned a 16-9 home victory over Waltham on Wednesday afternoon at Hormel. Medford was only up by one point at the half but came out in the second half showing what the team is capable of when its members work together.
“This was a great win,” said Head Coach Matt Galusi. “They were just a solid unit; they played together.”
Katherine Timmins and Cassidy LeBert each had five goals in the victory while Timmins also had two assists. Sophomore Hannah Gallup, “on a tear,” said Coach Galusis, followed up her hat trick from the last game with four goals on Wednesday. Sophomore Nicole Mortell contributed two goals and an assist.
Four Mustangs played “great defense,” according to Galusi: Ali deRosas, Adrienne Porrazzo, Desiree Savoia, and Hailey Centrella.
Coach Galusi also credited mid-fielders Lydia Regan and Jamie Traverse for stepping up and winning key face-offs.
“Without their play we don’t win that game,” said Galusi.
Medford is 6-3-1- overall and 3-0 in the GBL. The Mustangs are on the road at Marblehead, a top team, on Thursday. While Medford needs to win only two more games to qualify for the state tournament, Coach Galusi said the team’s goal is to win all of its remaining games.
