Medford Resident Receives ‘Unsung Heroines’ Award

Jehlen and TuckerOn April 29th the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women (MCSW) held its Tenth Annual Unsung Heroines of Massachusetts award ceremony at the State House. The awards recognize extraordinary women from across the state and thank them for the public leadership and volunteerism that make our neighborhoods, cities and towns better places to live.

Co-Anchor of NewsCenter 5, Liz Brunner, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies following a warm welcome from MCSW Chair Victoria Budson. Legislators across the Commonwealth nominated women who are making a meaningful impact on the communities in their districts.

Medford resident Dorothy Elizabeth Tucker was nominated by State Senator Patricia Jehlen.

“Dorothy has touched the lives of many residents,” said Senator Jehlen. “She encourages everyone to find their self-worth and to have fulfilling lives.”

Tucker was inspired by her hard working community-minded parents in her life-long commitment to helping others. Her first job in 1943 was at the James Jackson Putnam Children’s Center where she worked with young children who faced development disabilities. She inspired those children to be as independent as possible. Tucker also served many years with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. After retiring, Tucker has remained active in Zonta International, the West Medford Community Center, the Afro-American Remembrance Project, and is a co-founder of the Prometheus Dance Ensemble.
