Crowley Announces City Council Candidacy
|Medford resident and business leader Mark Crowley is announcing his candidacy for Medford City Council. All are invited to a kickoff event at Salvatore’s in Medford Square on Thursday, June 13, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. For more information, visit www.CrowleyForMedford.com.
“I’m running because as a homeowner, I’m frustrated with rising property taxes and the lack of progress with the revitalization of Medford Square, and elsewhere across the city,†said Crowley. “It’s time for new faces and fresh perspectives in City Hall. I have 20 years of experience as a business leader and I want to use my skills to make a difference for my community, neighbors, and family.â€
Crowley has spent his career helping companies grow while balancing their budgets. Today, he manages a $200 million budget as the Director of Finance at Constant Contact, an online marketing company that helps small businesses and non-profit organizations become successful.
“I’ve studied our city’s budget and found that property tax rates are up 35% over the past 5 years, with not much to show for it. Even the price of gas is up only 10% over the same period.†said Crowley. “Do we have 35% more police or 35% more teachers? Are there 35% fewer potholes?â€
Â
The revitalization of Medford Square is another key issue for Crowley.  “Much has been promised over the years, yet too many parts of the Square still look tired and uninviting,†he said.  “Medford families shouldn’t have to go to Somerville or Winchester to enjoy an evening out. We need to create a business friendly environment to support existing owners and encourage new shops and restaurants. And, we must improve the upkeep of streets, sidewalks, and storefronts in order to create a pleasant and safe atmosphere for pedestrian and bike traffic.â€
Born in Medford, Crowley currently lives on Boynton Road. He received a degree in Economics from Brandeis University and is also a graduate of M.I.T., where he earned his MBA.  He and his wife Suanna, an independent consultant to universities and museums, have been married for 15 years. They have two daughters, ages 1 and 8.
In the months ahead, Crowley plans to go door-to-door across the City to share his vision for Medford. For campaign updates, visit www.Facebook.com/CrowleyForMedford.
