Mustang Baseball Team Beats Haverhill, Advances in State Tourney

The boys varsity baseball team defeated Haverhill 11-7 at home on Saturday to advance in the state tournament.
Working in 90 degree heat, John Lavoie pitched the first five innings, giving up only two earned runs while Chris Hayes earned the win in relief.
It was a high scoring game that was tied several times, but the Mustangs prevailed, making key offensive and defensive plays when it counted most.
Head Coach Mike Nestor said the coaching staff is “extremely proud” of the team.
“[We] couldn’t have asked for a better effort in such extreme conditions. These kids are hungry to keep winning,” said Coach Nestor.
Senior captain Jake Porrazzo led his team with three RBI’s and three runs scored, according to assistant coach Ryan Kozul. Sean Doncaster had two doubles and two RBI’s. Hayes also contributed two RBI’s while Dave Center knocked in a run. Nick Rocco and Ryan Covelle each had two runs scored while Covelle also added an RBI.
Medford moves on to the quarter final round of the state tournament. The Mustangs host Billerica at 4:00PM at Playstead Park on Thursday (postponed from Monday).
