Trooper shoots, wounds 2 in Medford
Route 16 in Medford was shut down in both directions between Wellington and Mystic Avenue following a shooting early on Friday, Oct. 11. Boston.com reports a state trooper shot and wounded two people after a man allegedly drove his car at the trooper during a traffic stop on Route 16 eastbound in Medford, authorities said.
The driver, 19-year-old Stephen Cabrera of Haverhill, remains hospitalized, though his injuries are not considered life-threatening. He is facing numerous charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon, authorities told Boston.com.
The trooper stopped the car for potential traffic violations around 2:30 a.m., near the Route 16 and Locust Street, an area near the Meadow Glen Mall, authorities said.
The trooper got out of his cruiser and started walking toward the vehicle, Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office said in a statement.
“The vehicle, with two male occupants inside, accelerated toward the trooper,”’ the statement said. “The trooper discharged his weapon, striking the two men inside the vehicle.’”
Both Cabrera and the passenger were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment. The passenger, whose injuries were also not life-threatening, has since been released from the hospital, Ryan’s office said.
Cabrera also faces charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, possession of a Class D drug, operating after registration revocation, speeding, marked lanes violation, failure to stop for police, and failure to stop at a red light.
The trooper, whose name was not released, is assigned to the Medford barracks.
The subsequent investigation led to the closure of Route 16, in both directions, for several hours early today.
The investigation is ongoing, Ryan’s office said.
