State Senator Katherine Clark and Frank Addivinola will move forward in the race to fill former Congressman Ed Markey’s seat following wins in Tuesday’s primary.
Clark defeated six other Democrats while Addivinola bested two other Republicans seeking their party’s nomination.
According to results from the AP, Clark received around 30% of the vote in the Fifth Congressional district. Addivinola received around 48% of the vote in the district and 324 votes from Medford voters.
In Medford, State Representative Carl Sciortino won his home town with 47% of the vote (2,484 votes). Clark received 1,268 votes while Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian had 920 votes in Medford.
Sciortino thanked his supporters and congratulated Clark in a tweet on Tuesday night:
“Congratulations to @KClarkCongress. A huge thank you to my awesome campaign team and all of my wonderful supporters,” wrote Sciortino.
Clark and Addivinola will square off in the general election on Tuesday, December 10.
Hello Inside Medford: All the candidates in this race were all over the map. almost like the upcoming November 5 election here in Medford (for Mayor and for City Council.) The primary for 5th Congressional featured a state rep and a sheriff running for higher office. My hope is that now they will get back to work and do the jobs they are being paid to do. Katherine Clark is someone that I tell candidates running for office in Medford is someone they should emulate. Ms. Clark has offered her opinion in the Malden Evening News and on/in other media outlets, to her credit. We want to know how our politicians/candidates think. Ms. Clark was the most forthright of all the candidates. Congratulations to her. She worked harder than the others well in advance of this election. That should be a lesson to all individuals running for elected office.
