St. Clement’s Anchormen Earn Thanksgiving Day Win

The St. Clement Anchormen capped off their 4-7 season with a 29-16 Thanksgivings Day win over turkey day rival St. Joseph’s Prep of Brookline. Junior Ivan Mertilus (Revere) led the Anchormen to the win with two touchdowns, finishing the season with more than 1,500 rushing yards.

The Anchormen opened the first quarter with a 15-yard TD run by QB Michael Gonzalez (Revere), and closed the 1st quarter with Mertilus’ first TD run. Senior Joshua Balan (Malden) plowed into the end zone for two points and gave the Anchormen a 15-0 lead. Mertilus ran twenty-three yards for his second TD in the second quarter and gave the Anchormen a 29-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, Joseph Gonzalez (Revere) ran seventy-five yards for a TD. Senior Stephen Caloggero (Medford) followed up with the two point conversion to give St. Clement a commanding 29-0 lead that they never relinquished.

The 2013 Division 6 Catholic Central League champions battled through their 2014 rebuilding season. The team looks forward to the next season and the future with a young and skilled crew of Anchormen to lead the team to another Catholic Central League title and championship.
