Medford’s Bates Honored at Islanders’ Decades Night
|It’s one of the few times a Medford native can celebrate a New York team; on Saturday Medford’s Shawn Bates was among several New York Islanders hockey players honored by the team’s “Decades Night.”
Bates is a 1993 Medford High School graduate who went on to be a star hockey player at Boston University before playing for ten years in the NHL, seven of which was spent with the New York Islanders.
“I’ve never heard the building louder than when Shawn scored that penalty shot goal,†former player Ken Morrow said in an Islanders’ article in which he referenced Bates’ legendary game-winning goal in game four of the 2002 playoffs.
