Krystle Campbell Scholarships Awarded to UMass Students

Chancellor J. Keith Motley and UMass Trustee Richard Campbell presented UMass Boston student Micki Hall with a $5,000 Krystle Campbell Scholarship at a campus event celebrating the Boston Marathon and honoring Campbell, a former UMass Boston student who was a victim of the 2013 marathon bombings.

Miriam Asangong, a UMass Dartmouth student, also received a scholarship.

The Krystle Campbell Scholarship is presented to students pursuing business degrees. Campbell attended UMass Boston from 2005 to 2007 and received a degree posthumously.

“I feel very privileged and touched that I will be receiving this scholarship in the memory of Krystle Campbell, who was an outstanding citizen here in the city of Boston,” Hall said.

A Florida native, Hall is a junior in the College of Management, majoring in finance and minoring in economics. While at UMass Boston, Hall has held four internships in finance, including roles at John Hancock and the State Street Corporation.

She has served as a mentor with Strong Women, Strong Girls, started a community service club at UMass Boston, and volunteered at the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at Action for Boston Community Development. After graduating, Hall plans to become a financial analyst.

The scholarship announcement was held in the Campus Center’s Alumni Lounge, which fittingly houses a portrait of Krystle Campbell.

“This scholarship means so much to the UMass community and providing other students the opportunity to pursue their academic dreams is a worthy tribute to Krystle, who was so dedicated to learning,” Motley said.

The Krystle Campbell Scholarship was started by UMass Trustee Richard Campbell and his wife Barbara. Campbell is not related to Krystle, but like her, grew up in Medford and attended UMass Boston.

“Krystle has been a source of inspiration to me personally and to so many throughout the UMass community, and we are proud to announce the first two recipients of the scholarship named in her honor,” Richard Campbell said. “This event, the scholarship fund and the 2015 ‘Running for a Reason’ Marathon team are worthy tributes to Krystle’s dedication, passion and spirit.”

Paralympian and Boston Marathon champion Dr. Cheri Blauwet also spoke at the event.

he scholarship fund currently stands at $440,000 in cash and commitments. The goal is to increase the fund to the $1 million level. Serving as the not-for-profit partner for the Krystle Campbell Scholarship endowment, the UMass Foundation is responsible for receiving and managing private gifts.

The event also celebrated the 2015 UMass Marathon team, “Running for a Reason: Krystle’s Legacy.” The team features nine runners, including local business executives, and UMass students, graduates, and staff.
