On Wednesday, April 22nd, Medford High School & Stoneham High School teamed up to fight cancer hosting their first annual Strike Out Cancer game to benefit the American Cancer Society.

The Strike Out Cancer game, which is part of the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer program, took place at Edward A. LeLacheur Park, home of the Lowell Spinners. The game featured a ceremonial first pitch thrown out by honorees from both Medford and Stoneham. Being honored on the Medford side was former Boston Red Sox pitcher and Medford native Bill Monbouquette, who lost his battle with leukemia this past January. Bill’s grandchildren threw out the ceremonial first pitch in Bill’s honor. On the Stoneham side, the first pitch was thrown out by Stoneham baseball player and leukemia survivor, Brandon McCarthy who has battled lymphoblastic leukemia since July of 2012 and is currently maintaining his remission status.

The game, which was a double-header featured cancer awareness as well as fundraising from both Medford High School and Stoneham High School. “The American Cancer Society is very grateful for the hard work and support from both Medford High School and Stoneham High School baseball teams as well as coach Mike Nestor and Steve Yanakopulous and volunteer Geri McCarthy” said Community Events Manager Brian Casalinova.
