Billy Mottram (Haverhill, MA/Chicago Cubs) and Peter Copa (Malden, MA/California Angels) hit third inning homers to lead the Chiefs to a 4-3 win over the Melrose Americans at Maplewood Park on Wednesday. With the win the Chiefs extend their season opening winning streak to four games.
Mottram gave his team a 2-1 lead when he hit his first homer of the year to left-center. Johnny Welch (Medford, MA/Rockland Boulders) followed with a rocket double to left before Copa made it a 4-1 game with a long two run homer to straightaway left.
The Americans chipped a couple of runs off the lead to make it 4-3 heading for the seventh inning.
Matt DiCato (2-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Mitchell Clegg (Woburn, MA/Washington Nationals).
Southpaw Evan Walsh (Arlington, MA/Bentley) came out of the Chiefs’ bullpen and got a big strikeout to begin the seventh before giving way to Mike DiCato (pictured) who picked up the save.
The Chiefs play the Arlington Trojans at Lexington High School on Saturday at 1:15 PM. On Sunday, they meet the Trojans again, this time at Summer Street Field in Arlington at 5:00 PM.
