Math Teacher Passes Away at School
Students, Faculty in Shock After Sudden Death
Daughter Responds to Supporters: “I Will Stay Strong”

A beloved middle school math teacher passed away suddenly at school Thursday morning.
Maria Lisa Davis, 56, a Grade 6 math teacher at the McGlynn Middle School, passed away from a heart attack early Thursday morning.
“Our prayers and thoughts are with her daughter Arianna and all the members of her family,” said School Superintendent Roy Belson in a statement on the school’s webpage.
In the statement Superintendent Belson said a Crisis Intervention Team made up of professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel is available, as well as counselors at each school.
Parents are encouraged to contact McGlynn Middle School Psychologist Sandy Watson as well as Guidance Director Frank Howard with any concerns.
“We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to help you and your child as needed,” said Belson.
“Mrs. Davis was a great teacher at the McGlynn…She’ll be dearly missed,” said Dave Adams, parent of a 7th grader who had Ms. Davis for his 6th grade home room and math class.
“It is a very sad day and my heart goes out to all her colleagues and her students at the McGlynn School, the math department, and the Vocational School where she began her career in Medford. Most especially we think of her daughter in this difficult time,” said School Committee member Paulette Van der Kloot.
“MariaLisa has been my neighbour since Bob and I moved to Medford nine years ago. She always took great interest in the children on the street and was always a warm presence. Her beautiful daughter, Arianna, is a most purposeful, resourceful, and delightful young woman. I can’t imagine her shock and sorrow as a result of her mom’s sudden passing,” said Linda Garriott.

Davis’ daughter, Arianna, a McGlynn Middle School student, responded Friday to the outpouring of support she has received on InsideMedford.com. Nearly 250 and counting comments of support have been posted by friends and members of the community.
“it nice to see that a lot of people care about me, and the death of my mom but i will stay strong (as people have been saying for me to do) even though it might be hard…i don’t [know] what i’m going to do, i might move and change schools or saty (sic) here i don’t know… but i really love that i have support (even from people i don’t know) i will be in school on monday! i love and miss you a lot mommy,” wrote Arianna in her comment on InsideMedford.com
A wake is being held out of Gaffey Funeral Home on Monday, June 15, from 4PM-8PM. The funeral will be on Tuesday at St. Francis at 11AM, with doors opening at 10AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking friends to consider contributions to an education fund for Davis’ daughter Arianna. All donations should be made out to “Arianna Davis”, P.O. Box 900, Manchester, NH 03105.

I havent known Ms. Davis for a very long time but her daughter ariana is a really nice girl and so isnt her mother. None of them deserved this to happen to them. Ms. Davis will forever be missed and always in our hearts forever. We love you both and give you nothing but respect

I had Mrs. Davis for my 6th grade year in 2004-2005.Math was a constant struggle for me. Every Tuesday after school,Mrs. Davis would help me with basic math skills that I had difficulty with.Without her, I woulden’t have the math skills to continue in high school level classes. Ms. Davis was a great person. She was an unforgettable teacher. She helped many people develop math skills, made strong bonds with her students, and even more. She always would help students with things that went beyond her teaching boundaries. Also, she was supportive of her own daughter, Arianna, a middle school student herself. She would always show up to her soccer games, or swim meets and “hoot and holler” for Arianna. She was such a great, supportive teacher and mother. Nonetheless, her daughter, Arianna must be going through a lot right now. We remember how Ms. Davis walked down the hall with her arms open ready to hug Arianna just to bug her (and to show how much she loved Arianna). We hope that Arianna is feeling okay and we would like to support her as much as we can.

As I was on my way to school today, one of the many people who have changed and shaped my life dearly was on my mind, Ms. Davis. When some of my good friends told me the news, I was in total shock and I still am. It just can not sink in yet. She was an amazing human being and a great, but challenging, math teacher. I was fortunate enough to have a relationship with her, not only student to teacher, but as friend to friend since her daught who is also a good friend of mine now, Arianna, was in the play with me “Seussical the Musical”. She would also always greet me last and this year and ask how I was doing or ask how my old sister, Kate was since she had her as a student too. I am very lucky to have met a wonderful person like Ms. Davis. She has helped me reach some of my goals, with the play last year and she was the one who got me into the talent competition recently back in October 2009, “Medford’s Rising Star”. Without her encouragement and help, I probably would not be the type of person I am today. Tank you for everything Ms. Davis. Rest in peace and I’ll keep a safe eye on Arianna for you, including many others. You will always be on my mind and heart, forever and always.

Ms. David was a very friendly person. I remember always stopping in the hall to say hi to her and she would always smile back and say hi back. I am in my 30s who was positively influenced by my math teacher in high school. He passed a few years ago and it saddened me deeply. However, he taught me confidence, to be capable, and never to give up. I have kept these values into my adult life. I see a lot of parallels here. Teaching is such a noble profession, so if you are a student now who has Ms. McGlynn remember that one teacher’s influence can last a lifetime. Remember to give the same positive influence in your adult life and the world will be a better place. That’s why her profession and her spirit will always be celebrated. Rest in peace, friend.

arianna, im so sorry. i love you and your mom. ms.davis was my math teacher last year and she always pushed kids to do there best and had high hopees. she was so easy to talk to and wasa great teacher, friend and mother to arianna. i remember last year when i was in “susical the musical” ms.davis would go to almost every practice and always give us snacks. she was a great teacher and this year i would always stop and talk to her about what was going on or just to say hi.
so many tears cryed todaay. we all love you both so much.

It’s unbelievable because I just saw you a couple weeks ago. I remember helping you afterschool and you would give me a whole hour even if I stayed for a little while, but I guess life is cruel at times. RIP Ms. Davis &Stay strong Arianna.

Even though I had you in the sixth grade and now I’m in the eight grade you were one of my most favorite teachers that I ever had. Arianna, my earliest memories of being a mother include you and your mom. I drove by your house yesterday and could picture your mother sitting in the yard, smiling and waving for us to come over. Milan and I really enjoyed hanging out with you guys on Dwyer Circle. Your mom was one of the nicest people that I have ever met. I will miss her smile and her big heart. Dear Arianna,
You are about the strongest 6th grader I have met. You battle through a sprained ankle in gym class every weak without a moan or groan. You dealed with a cast in 5th grade but still didn’t let that stop you from any goal you had. And just recently your mother passed away.. and I know since you being the strongest 6th grader I have ever met is trying to stay strong. I know this is hard, but you have a great group of friends and teachers and your family. I can see where you get your strength from, your mother is also one of the strongest human beings I have met and it was a tragedy to see her go. But just remember that your mom loved you, and she will never stop and she will always be thinking about you, she will always be there for you at heart. Keep being that strong 6th grader I know you are. We will all help you get through this. People you don’t even know are there for you. For example, yesterday they had a place in the library where you could go and be sad and cry and people were down there crying and i ask them “Did you have Ms. Davis?” and they say no they just feel so bad for you. So everywhere you go you have people caring for you and you can trust them. I will be here for you every step of the way.

i want you to know that we all are suffering. your mom was the greatest no one could ever replace her. she heped me with math and even got me to under stand it. i thought that was impossible . remember that the roughest roads often lead to the top. i feel so sorry and if there was anything that i could do to reverse this i would do it gladly.

Isn’t it horrible how things happen like this in the world? Things happen, people move on; it’s life. Sadly, tragedy struck, and your mother had to leave us on Earth. It was her time, but the only thing I don’t get is, “Why during a math class?!” That, my friend, was just horrible timing. It’s like a nightmare that you just can’t wake up from, but you’re staying strong and getting through it, and that’s what I love to hear. Ari, you’ve got to be…no, I KNOW that you are the strongest friend I have. You’ve been through so much, and you’re getting through this tough time now. If your mother had to go from us so fast like that, it had to have been her time. Yes, it’s madness. But trust me, Ari. You have so many people right by your side if you have to cry on someone’s shoulder, including me. Remember that there’s always a Fireball here for ya!

I remember when at the beginning of the year we all thought you were so tough and mean. When I eventually went through the year you were the nicest and most caring person I ever had met. I got to be friends with Arianna and then you passed. It was unbelievably shocking. It made me think how fortunate we are to have these teachers that teach us these amazing things that we would never know without them. I will never think a teacher is mean again.
