The Medford High School crew team will hit the Charles for the first race of the spring season on Saturday afternoon.
The team will race against Greater Boston League rivals Malden, Somerville, and Cambridge.
Head Crew Coach Amy Byron said that though her team might be a little nervous, they are ready for the race tomorrow.
“I think we’ll make a good showing,” said Byron.
The team will race four four-person boats, two each for the boys and girls. The teams will race along a 1,250 meter route on the Charles River between the Western Avenue and River Street bridges.
While the public is not allowed to watch from the boathouse, they are more than welcome to cheer on the Mustangs from the riverbank and bridges along the route.
Twenty-three student athletes are on the team, which started last fall. The team was formed in a partnership with the Gentle Giant Rowing Club, which also sponsors teams for Somerville and Malden high schools.
The team has four upcoming races in May- the Lowell Invitational on May 4, Greater Lawrence in Malden on May 17, the MPRSA State Championships in Lowell on May 25, and Waynefleet in Malden on May 31.
The races in Malden are on the Malden River, which is where the team practices.
