Primary Set for Tuesday, September 16
|Voters to Choose Candidates for State, Federal Offices
– Allison Goldsberry
On Tuesday, September 16 the polls will open in Medford for voters to select candidates in Democratic and Republican primaries for state and federal offices.
Registered Democrats and Republicans, as well as those unenrolled in either party, will vote for a US Senator, US Congressman, Governor’s Councilor, State Senator, State Representative, and Register of Probate.
Sen. Kerry, Congressman Markey Face Some Challengers
For US Senate, incumbent Senator John Kerry is being challenged by Democrat Edward O’Reilly of Gloucester, a former firefighter, and Republican Jeffrey Beatty of Harwich, a former FBI agent and CIA officer.
US Congressman Edward Markey is being challenged in his seventh Congressional district seat by Republican John Cunningham of Revere, a small business owner.
Democrat Michael Callahan of Medford is running for re-election to the Governor’s Council for the sixth district. He is challenged by Democrat Roseann Trioufi-Mazzuchelli of Winthrop. There is no Republican opponent.
Sen. Jehlen, Rep. Garballey Run Unopposed
Democratic State Senator Pat Jehlen is running unopposed for re-election to her state senate seat, the 2nd Middlesex District, which includes all of Medford and parts of Somerville, Woburn, and Winchester.
There are three different state representatives in Medford, so voters will see different names on the ballots depending upon what section of Medford they call home.
Democratic State Representative Sean Garballey, elected during a special election in March for the 23rd Middlesex district for Arlington and part of Medford, is running unopposed for his seat. Rep. Garballey’s mostly West Medford district includes all of Ward 6 and precinct 2 of Ward 3.
Reps Donato and Sciortino Have Democratic Opponents
Democratic State Representative Paul Donato is running for re-election for the 35th Middlesex District, which includes part of Malden and all of Wards 1 and 2, precinct 1 of Ward 3, precinct 2 of Ward 7, and precinct 1 of Ward 8 in Medford. He is challenged by two Democrats, labor organizer Patrick McCabe and software consultant Jim Caralis, both of Medford.
Democratic State Representative Carl Sciortino is running for his third term and is being forced to mount a write-in and sticker campaign after he failed to get his name on the ballot. Democrat and Somerville Alderman Bob Trane is challenging Rep. Sciortino for the 34th Middlesex District seat, which includes part of Somerville and all of Wards 4 and 5, precinct 1 of Ward 7, and precinct 2 of Ward 8 in the Hillside section of Medford.
Register of Probate Buonomo Arrested, is Still on Ballot
Middlesex County Register of Probate John Buonomo, a Newton Democrat, is still on the ballot for his second full term despite being arrested in August for allegedly stealing public money. No one had filed papers to challenge Buonomo as of the deadline, which was well before his arrest in early August. Several candidates have launched write-in campaigns, including former Newton Mayor Tom Concannon, running as a Democratic, Somerville Alderman Sean O’Donovan, running as a Working Family candidate, and Natick Republican John Lambert, son of former Middlesex Country Register of Probate Donna Lambert. Buonomo has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. He has resigned as Register of Probate but has not suspended his campaign.
Absentee Voting Concludes at Noon Monday
Absentee voting has begun for those who will not be in Medford on primary day. Voting is taking place in Room 103 at City Hall and will officially end at 12PM on Monday, September 15, the day before the primary.
