Voter turnout in Medford, across the state, and in other states on so-called “Super Tuesday” was high, with many voters waiting in lines at the polls.
Turnout in Medford was much higher than in the previous presidential primary. In 2012 only 12.5% of registered voters participated in the presidential primary. In the 2008 presidential primary, about half of Medford’s registered voters came out to the polls.
Early numbers indicate that Medford voter turnout is close to 2008’s record-breaking levels. Medford has more registered voters now than in 2008 (36,872 vs 33,605) so the total number of ballots cast is higher.
Democratic voters in Medford were almost split down the middle between Hillary Clinton (49.5%, 6,771 votes) and Bernie Sanders (48.7%, 6,650), according to unofficial results released by the City Clerk. Republican voters broke for Donald Trump (52.6%, 2,344) by a wide margin. Marco Rubio (18.6%, 830), John Kasich (15.5%, 689), and Ted Cruz (8.6%, 383) followed.
The races for Democratic state committee man and woman were uncontested for James Campano and Teresa Walsh. Robert Cappucci defeated two other candidates in his bid for Republican state committee man while Joyce Elizabeth Paul was the only candidate for Republican state committee woman.
Thanks for the scoop! It’s nice to see Medford approached record-breaking turnouts again.
